At our recent community event, where we had the pleasure of hosting approximately 300 attendees from diverse cultures, languages, and backgrounds, two exceptional KCDC Policy Council members truly stood out. 

When asked what was their favorite part of the event, they openly shared:

“Seeing the smiles on people’s faces, especially the children. They received all kinds of goodies. The icing on the cake was the Seahawks Mascot playing with the children!” -Makiatu

“Children’s toys, food items, and many other materials were distributed! – ” Nidal

This event would not have been possible without the incredible support of Northwest Harvest and our wonderful community partners. To the amazing team at Northwest Harvest: Sol, Senight, Jeanie, Alex, and Rumi, we’d like to extend our heartfelt appreciation!

The cherry on top was the support of the Seattle Seahawks who brought extra cheer and joy to the event!

Thank you, Nidal and Makiatu, for your outstanding efforts, and thank YOU, our incredible community, for your unwavering support. Together, we’re building a brighter future for all in Kent, Washington! 

Through the KCDC Policy Council, more people of color, low-income, immigrant and refugee residents will have access to positions of leadership within various city councils and decision-making committees. Policy Council members support civic engagement amongst community members in Kent while also creating spaces for diverse groups to interact, learn from, and work with each other.

The new Initiative/Task Force will address the healthcare disparities faced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) communities in Kent through education reform, stakeholder/community mobilization, and advocacy. We will partner with local educational institutions to create a culturally responsive health care navigator curricula, increase access to career pathways in the medical & behavioral health fields, and develop policy recommendations and advocate for the creation of a new Workforce Development Plan for greater health and economic development outcomes for BIPOC residents.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this effort! We look forward to continued momentum in equitable community development so that everyone can participate in and benefit from decisions that shape their neighborhood and the greater community, especially communities of color, immigrants, refugees and low-income residents.

Join the KCDC Policy Council and the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance for a special Tenants Town Hall with impacted tenants and stakeholders to get ready for the 2023 state legislative session. Bills to address rent increases, to enforce tenant protections and budget requests to increase funding for eviction prevention will be discussed. Tenants and allies are invited.

Join the KCDC Health Equity Committee in our effort to advocate for better connections to culturally appropriate healthcare in Kent!

We will learn more about a tool for closed-loop referrals from UniteUs called Community Information Exchanges (CIEs), where referrals for services between healthcare providers, behavioral health services, and community organizations work closely together so that individuals have better access to the care and supports they need to improve their health.
